Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kidskate?
Kidskate is a 30 minute skating program designed for children aged 3-5 who have never been on the ice before.

How do I know if my child is ready for Kidskate?
If your child is at least 3 years old, they are eligible for Kidskate.

What if my child doesn’t like/isn’t ready for Kidskate?
The first session is on a trial basis and a full refund is offered if you decide not to continue with the program. After you attend the second class, no refund is available.

What if my child in Kidskate is ready to move up to Canskate?
The Kidskate Coach will advise you your child is ready to move up. You can then register your skater in Canskate for the next session. If you need to move classes in the middle of a session, that can also be arranged and you will be billed for the difference in program costs.

What is Canskate?
Canskate is a 45 minute skating program designed for children 4-12. There are 4 stages within the Canskate class, so it is possible to be in Canskate for several years. When the skater completes the 4 stages of Canskate, they are then ready to branch off into other avenues of skating (i.e. Ringette, Hockey, Speed Skating or Figure Skating- Jumpstart Program)In the first stage, skaters learn how to skate forward, backward and stop. As they progress through the stages, they also learn how to turn and jump in addition to improving how they skate forward, backward and stop.

Are Kidskate and Canskate offered at the same time?
Yes. Kidskate and Canskate share the same ice time, Kidskate just starts 15 minutes later. For example: If Canskate starts at 6pm, then Kidskate starts at 6:15pm and both classes end together at 6:45pm.

What times are Kidskate and Canskate offered?
All times are posted on the schedule on this website.

What are the prices for Kidskate and Canskate?
All prices are posted on the schedule on this website.

What equipment do my skaters need?
All skaters need helmets (no bicycle helmets), and skates. Additional padding is optional, but ski pants are recommended for Kidskaters as they spend a lot of time on the ice! Also, gloves and warm clothes are needed.

Why are your programs more expensive than other programs?
Because our coaches are trained under the National Coaches’ Certification Program (NCCP) and our programs are organized and regulated under Skate Canada, the quality of the service we provide is of a better quality.

What is the $30.80 Skate Canada registration for?
The registration fee is payable once a year, no matter how frequently you skate with us, and is used by our parent organization for the coaching and organization of skating programs in Canada. Skate Canada regulates the standards of our coaching, programs and structure to ensure a high quality of service in any of it’s affiliated clubs across Canada.

What class sizes should I expect?
The maximum size of classes is 10 students per coach. However, small classes are more common especially with the lower levels of skating. Also, Program Assistants, who are current skating members of the St. Albert Skating Centre, are there to help with the class to ensure there is a high level of attention given to all skaters.

How do I register for your skating programs?
Currently, you need to fill out a registration form at our office in the Troy Murray Arena located in Servus Place. However, we are working towards a printable version of our form that you will be able to download from our website and then email or mail into us. Please watch for more updates.

Where are you located?
Our office is located in the Troy Murray Arena (past the dressing rooms) in Servus Credit Union Place.

When is your office open?
Office hours are Monday- Saturday 1:30-3:30pm.
